Some [Dis]assembly Required

Saturday, April 11, 2015

Yesterday, Lehigh AIAA, in conjunction with Pi Tau Sigma, the mechanical engineering honor society, hosted its first-ever aviation teardown event. Students gathered in one of the mechanical engineering classrooms in Packard Lab to take apart a variety of components donated by Gateway Aviation, Inc. located at the Allentown Queen City Municipal Airport. Armed with spanneres, socket wrenches, and hammers, students diassembled a Hartzell variable-pitch propeller and a Lycoming 0-235 airplane engine, and cut open a scrap aileron. Overall, everyone had a great time and learned a lot about general aviation parts, all while enjoying free pizza and a great chance to get some hands-on, practical experience.
